Problem with huge PDF files being created by PartyCAD

Question

I made a simple little project with a title, a design and two black & white views. When I create a PDF by clicking the Print button in the Page Editor, PartyCAD creates the PDF, but it is huge. I saved this to a file and looked at its properties. Its about 15MB, which is too big for me to email.

How can I fix this?

Answer

I had a look at the project file you sent me. The font you used for your main title is @Arial Unicode MS. When you use unusual fonts such as this, the entire font must be included in the PDF. In this case, the font is enormous.

Switching the font for your title text to Arial fixed the problem. Arial does not have to be included in the PDF because all Windows machines include the Arial font as part of the operating system. Verdana and Courier New are also low overhead fonts for the same reason.

When I made this simple change, the size of the PDF went from 15MB to 119KB. That's over 100 times smaller.

In general, PDFs produced by PartyCAD will be less than 1MB and their handling should present no problems. In jobs created using the 'Picture as Plan' option, the size of the PDF will be larger but this can be controlled by using appropriately sized images for your plans. For most work, an image size of less that 1500 pixels on the longest dimension will work best and give reasonably sized PDFs.
