Moving data to a new machine

How can I move my PartyCAD data to a different computer?

Traditional:

1. On the old machine, click Project Select, click on the project you want to move one time to select it. Now click Backup, Other and Save. This compresses all the the files related to the project into a single backup file located in the C:\PartyCAD\Backup folder. For instance, backing up a project called Hanks might give the file C:\PartyCAD\Backup\Hanks.bak

2. Move the file from the old computer to the new one, placing it in the same place. At the end of the step you would have a file on the new machine called C:\PartyCAD\Backup\Hanks.bak, same as on the old machine.

3. On the new machine, run PartyCAD and click Project Select, Restore, Other and then click the desired file to restore from. In our example, this would be Hanks or Hanks.bak. Once you have selected the desired file, click Open and PartyCAD will unpack the files into a project on your new machine.

Another way to move data is to get out of PartyCAD entirely and to do it using Windows.

1. On the old machine, find the project folder containing the data related to the project you want to move. If the project is called Hanks, the folder will likely be named C:\PartyCAD\Projects\Hanks

2. Copy this folder to the same location on the new machine and the next time your run PartyCAD on that machine, the project will appear in the list of available projects.

Yet another way to move or share a project between two machines is through the use of a USB drive.

These little devices plug into a USB slot on your computer and look like a disk drive to the operating system. To set up a USB drive for use with PartyCAD, run PartyCAD and click Help/ File Management & Networking. This will bring up a PDF file that explains how to tell PartyCAD about your drive. You will need to do this with both machines in question.

Once you have set up your drive, it will appear as the "Other" location in the various Project Manager screens.

To move a project on the old machine onto the USB drive

1. Run PartyCAD and click the Project Manager, then click on the project you want to move one time to select it.

2. Click Move Project, then Other radio button and then Move Now. This will cause the project to me moved to the USB drive and removed from the hard drive on the old machine.

3. Plug the USB drive into your new machine and PartyCAD will automatically read it and list the projects it contains.

4. Should you want to move the project from the USB drive onto the new machine, just use Move Project to handle the chore, selecting Local as the destination of the project.

Many people who use PartyCAD on multiple machines, say at home and at work, just keep all their projects on a USB drive and carry this back and forth between the machines. Don't get too cocky though, occasionally these little devices go bad and it is good to have a backup on one of the machines for fallback purposes.

If you want to move the PartyCAD program, along with all of your data, to a new machine, proceed as follows:

1. Using the Control Panel, remove PartyCAD from your old machine. This will remove the program and other files that ship on the PartyCAD CD, but will not remove the projects you yourself have created.

2. Copy the entire C:\PartyCAD folder from your old machine to the new one. If you are using a CD to do this, do not close the CD as that will mark the files "Read Only" and cause some confusion later on.

3. Once your old C:\PartyCAD folder has been copied to the new machine, install PartyCAD on the new machine using your PartyCAD CD.

When the installation completes, you should be able to run the program and access your PartyCAD projects on the new machine.

If PartyCAD complains about write-protected files when you run it on the new machine, then your files have been marked as "Read Only" as mentioned above. To fix this, get out of PartyCAD, go to the C:\PartyCAD folder, right-click the folder name, click Properties, and uncheck the Read Only attribute. Once you do this, PartyCAD should start behaving normally.
